Courses & Programs

  • Literacy 101 - Basic Literacy

    This is a one-on-one instructional program designed for students who cannot read, write, or compute information at a functional level, and need help with math whose primary language is English. Students are matched with tutors based on information provided from the student assessment. Once matched, the pair meets to improve basic education skills for about three hours each week with the schedule coordinated between the student and the instructor.

  • English as a Second Language (ESL)

    The ESL program emphasizes skill development in English reading, writing, and speaking. Classes are offered in morning, afternoon, and evening hours. Classes are grouped by levels 0 through 5. Students progress through levels at their own pace and are re-assessed upon request based on the student’s needs.

    We currently offer language assistance for those whose native language is Spanish, Urdu, Gujariti and Hindi.

  • High School Equivalency

    Students who have not earned a High School Diploma have the option of signing up for the GED, TASC, or HiSET Exam. Our High School Equivalency program provides an overview of these tests while specifically preparing students for the GED. GED classes meet two days per week to improve skills in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. Classes are offered at different levels based on students' incoming skills. Classes run for the full academic year.

  • United States Citizenship

    Citizenship classes are ideal for the student who is preparing to apply, or has recently applied, for U.S. citizenship. Classes focus on American History, Civics and US Government, and English language proficiency. The course also provides students with practice through mock interviews and preparation to take the US Citizenship Exam.

  • Digital Literacy

    Computer Lab courses teach basic technology skills: basic computer functions, Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, including email, internet and other digital programs. A basic skills assessment is conducted for each individual to develop curriculum around their needs.

English @ Work

A program of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County

  • Increase access to adult literacy programs by providing more options for vulnerable communities.

  • Provide a variety of formats for service delivery to meet the needs of adults including virtual and in-person learning.

  • Employers partner with the Literacy Council of Fort Bend to provide English @ Work education programs for their workers who report challenges.

  • Create geographically divers literacy “hubs” through partnerships with local government, businesses and other non-profit organizations.

  • Address the technology divide in communities through partnerships.

Electives (Level 4 and up)

  • Public Speaking

    The student will gain confidence in using the English language as a means of expressing themselves through studying the art of public speaking, reviewing famous speeches to identify rhetorical and psychological elements to make them so powerful ad timeless, creating and delivering their own speeches serving different purposes (ice breaker, informative, demonstrative, and persuasive). Additionally, the student will enhance his or her English vocabulary and develop confidence in their command of the English language by researching and being prepared to argue both sides of debate topics drawn from current events.

  • Culture Shock

    Learn about the history of Fort Bend County and the people who live here. Then, look at different governmental, social service, or private institution each month involved in education, information distribution, social services, heathcare, executive and legislative bodies, legal and judicial systems, infrastructure (parks, traffic, flood control, etc.), and cultural and entertainment opportunities.

    This class will sometimes have field trips to various places within Fort Bend County to learn about these topics and we will almost always have speakers from various institutions and organizations to answer questions and explain how things work in Fort Bend County.

  • Conversation Circles

    This course helps students gain confidence in their conversational skills, learn more about articulation and the cultural components of conversational English. Students will learn about current events and practice their skills learned in class by interacting and conversing about those topics. Ample opportunities exist within the class to work on pronunciation, enunciation, and communication skills.

The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County partners with a variety of volunteer groups, faith-based entities, and non-profit organizations to provide adult education and literacy programs in local communities across fort bend county in order to assist individuals with accessing services in their own neighborhoods.
