Literacy 101 - Basic Literacy
This program supports English-speaking learners with developing their reading, writing, or math. Students are matched with a tutor based on assessment results and meet in one-on-one or small group sessions, either in person or online, on a flexible schedule.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
Classes are available for Beginners to Advanced learners. Students typically complete one level per academic year, with progress monitored through periodic evaluations. In-person classes are available, with online learning options for select students.

High School Equivalency/GED
Our High School Equivalency program helps students prepare for the GED exam. Classes meet twice per week and cover English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. Students are placed in levels based on their skills, with enrollment lasting 3–7 months.

Citizenship Preparation Journey
This course prepares students for the U.S. citizenship process, covering American History, Civics, U.S. Government, and English language proficiency. Preparation includes mock interviews and exam practice. Classes are available online and in person.

Digital Literacy
Our semester-long courses teach Basic and Intermediate technology skills, including computer functions, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, internet use, best practices, and other digital tools. A skills assessment helps create a customized learning plan. Classes are in person only.

Public Speaking
(Level 4 and up)
Build confidence speaking English in front of others. Students study short, well known speeches and learn why they are effective. They practice giving different types of speeches, such as introductions, information talks, and persuasive speeches. Students also learn new vocabulary and practice respectful debate on current topics.

Culture Shock
(Level 4 and up)
Learn how Fort Bend County works and who lives here. Each month, students explore local services such as schools, healthcare, government, and community programs. Guest speakers often visit to explain their work. Some classes include field trips to local places in Fort Bend County to help students better understand the community.

Conversation Circles
(Levels vary)
Practice everyday English conversation in a friendly setting. Students talk about current events and real life topics. The class focuses on pronunciation, clear speaking, and listening skills. Students also learn cultural norms used in common conversations.

Grammar & Writing
(Level 3 and up)
Improve grammar and writing skills. Students practice sentence structure, verb tenses, and essay writing. Students learn vocabulary and appropriate usage. Lessons focus on clear and correct writing and expression of thoughts, helping build students’ confidence to communicate effectively through writing.
English @ Work
A program of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County
Increase access to adult literacy programs by providing more options for vulnerable communities.
Provide a variety of formats for service delivery to meet the needs of adults including virtual and in-person learning.
Employers partner with the Literacy Council of Fort Bend to provide English @ Work education programs for their workers who report challenges.
Create geographically divers literacy “hubs” through partnerships with local government, businesses and other non-profit organizations.
Address the technology divide in communities through partnerships.
The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County partners with a variety of volunteer groups, faith-based entities, and non-profit organizations to provide adult education and literacy programs in local communities across fort bend county in order to assist individuals with accessing services in their own neighborhoods.
